Special Episode: Propositions 26 and 27 – Dueling Sports Betting Initiatives

Episode Summary

Today we present a Special Episode of the Capitol Weekly Podcast, recorded live, Thursday May 26 at CALIFORNIA VOTES, A 2022 Election Preview. This episode focuses on two Ballot Initiatives, Propositon 26 and Propostion 27, that would make sports betting legal in California. Rival proponents have introduced dueling Ballot Propositions that would allow legal sports wagering in California. The first, Prop 26, proposed by a coalition of California Tribes would allow federally recognized Native American tribes to operate roulette, dice games, and sports wagering on tribal lands, subject to compacts negotiated by the Governor and ratified by the Legislature. The competing measure, Prop 27, backed by international gaming entities FanDuel and DraftKings, would allow commercial sports betting for entities who meet requirements, including a $100 million license fee. Panelists Brandon Castillo of the Coalition for Safe, Responsible Gaming and Chris Grove, a Gambling industry entrepreneur, discuss the merits of the two proposals, moderated by journalsit Lara Korte of Politico. The Sportsbook campaign, Californians for Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Support, was invited, but declined to participate. CALIFORNIA VOTES was presented by Capitol Weekly and was made possible by the support of our underwriters: The Coalition for Safe, Responsible Gaming, The Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations, Western States Petroleum Association, KP Public Affairs, Perry Communications, Capitol Advocacy and California Professional Firefighters
